FA Cup: Charlton boss Chris Powell Street has missed opportunity

Chris Powell was left to wonder what might have been after watching Charlton Athletic thrown out
of the FA Cup at Sheffield United.

A meeting quarterfinal strongly disputed in Bramall Lane saw few opportunities of note created before the
hour , neither team is ready to open with a day at Wembley on the line.

He was, however , to be the Addicks who obtained the first clear view of the lens - Callum Harriott sliding off a gaping target after a quick free kick that allowed Marcus Tudgay loop the ball over the blades goalkeeper Mark Howard.

He had to pay in the 65th minute as the hosts opened the scoring by Ryan Flynn and added a second moments later as Richard Wood deflected a shot against John Brayford a foot of Ben Hamer past.

Powell admitted later that Harriott miss proved to be a turning point in the tie with Charlton unable to give their 5000 traveling supporters anything to shout .

He told the club's official website : " Goals change games.

"You have to take your chances and we had a gilt-edged one that we had before the post to go to the other end and notched a goal. "

"You have to take your chances and we had a gilt-edged one that we had before the post to go to the other end and notched a goal.

" It is unfortunate for Callum because he was alive and well played , but if you are a goal ahead , then you have something to cling to.

"If we go ahead then the game can become tense, as he did when we started to run, so that was a great moment for us.

"There were not too many times but this was certainly not one that could have put us in a position to win the game .

"I'm really disappointed for the fans because their support was brilliant , lots of them came overnight and unfortunately we could not give them what they wanted. "

Charlton must now turn their attention to the scrap for survival championship, with the results of Saturday after having fallen at the foot of the second tier table , four points adrift of safety.

Powell, whose side have four games in hand on most of the sides above them, added: " It can not be anything else now .

"We are disappointed today, but without. We have some games in hand and it's all in our hands.

"If we win two games next week ( against Huddersfield Town and Millwall ) , the picture will look different . "
