Fourth seed Fernando Verdasco defeated fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in straight sets to take one of six games without a win in the final and claim the championship title beaten earth among men in the United States on Sunday.
Former world number seven Verdasco won his first title since 2010 with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) victory at the River Oaks Country Club.
Verdasco hammered four aces and saved six of seven break point chances in a match time of 52 minutes.
Verdasco Almagro made a work for the victory as he hit eight aces, won 72 percent of his first serve points and saved seven of the nine-break points.
It marked the second consecutive year Almagro finished runner-up in Houston.
